LAB-GROWN 101

Same diamond. Different origin.

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds grown in controlled conditions rather than extracted from the earth. Here is the part that actually matters when you are buying one.

What is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is made of carbon arranged in the same diamond crystal structure as a mined diamond. It is not cubic zirconia, moissanite or glass.

The practical difference is origin: one forms underground over geological time, while the other is grown using technology that recreates the conditions needed for diamond crystal growth.

Both can be cut, polished and graded using the same 4Cs: carat, colour, clarity and cut.

THE SIMPLE COMPARISON

The difference is where it came from.

MINED

Diamond crystal structure

HOW IT IS MADE

From seed to finished stone.

01

Start with a diamond seed

A small diamond seed provides the crystal foundation for controlled growth.

02

Grow the crystal

Technology creates an environment where carbon builds onto the seed and forms diamond crystal.

03

Cut, polish and grade

The rough diamond is cut and polished, then assessed for characteristics such as carat, colour, clarity and cut.

THE 4Cs

How diamonds are described.

The 4Cs are useful because they give you a common language for comparing stones instead of relying only on photos or marketing names.

C

Carat

Carat measures diamond weight. Two diamonds with the same carat can still look different depending on shape and cut.

C

Colour

Colour grades describe how colourless a diamond appears. Higher grades are closer to colourless.

C

Clarity

Clarity describes visible and microscopic inclusions or blemishes and how they affect the stone.

C

Cut

Cut describes how well the diamond’s proportions and finish handle light. It has a major effect on brilliance.

CERTIFICATION

Your report matters more than the sales pitch.

For a certified diamond, the grading report records identifying details and the stone’s assessed characteristics. Use it to verify what you are actually buying.

On Fine9 product pages, key grading information is shown alongside the jewellery so you can compare products without opening multiple tabs.

CHECK THESE FIRST

Shape & cut

Confirm the shape and cut description match the stone you chose.

Carat · Colour · Clarity

Use these grades to compare like with like rather than comparing only price.

Report number

The report number identifies the grading document associated with the stone.

Finish details

Cut, polish, symmetry and fluorescence can add useful context to the overall grading picture.

MYTH / FACT

Four things worth clearing up.

“Lab-grown means fake.”

Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds. Simulants such as cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials.

“You can always tell by looking.”

Normal visual inspection is not a reliable way to determine origin; specialised testing and grading documentation are used.

“Only mined diamonds can be graded.”

Lab-grown diamonds can also receive independent grading reports describing their characteristics.

“Carat tells you everything.”

Carat is only one part of the picture. Shape, cut, colour and clarity all affect appearance and price.
